Abstract

Investment priority in land development since the last two decades has been primarily overshadowed by the importance of oil palm. Its dominance continues to influence agricultural investors even after the American Soyabean Association campaign that resulted in the decline of demand for the Malaysia palm oil in the late 80's. An analysis is therefore necessary to identify choice in portfolio investment between oil palm and rubber in a simplified E-V frontier problem. The result evidently suggests that although oil palm was able to generate a higher expected return it was much more risky compared to rubber. The paper also discusses the performance of these primarily commodities in the light of FELDA scheme during the First to the Fifth Malaysia Plan.
