Recent development of cocoa insect pests management in Sabah Malaysia

Abstract

The economic importance biology and ecology are described in brief for major cocoa insect pests. At present the cocoa podborer Conopomorpha cramerella is the most serious insect pest. The ring barkborer Endoclita hosei trunk borer Cerosterna sp. branch borer Zeuzera roricyanea mosquito bug Helopeltis clavifer bee bug Platyngomiriodes apiformis mealybug Planococcus citri Ferrisiana virgata leaf-hopper Empoasca sp and false spider mite Brevipalpus phoenicis are considered as important pests. The occassional or minor pests are becoming a menace in the state. Factors which induce the outbreak of these insect pests and the possibility of using integrated pest management programmes for cocoa are discussed
