Abstract

In the Malaysian cocoa industry gamma-HCH is the standard insecticide for use in controlling Helopeltis infestations. Nevertheless owing to possible legislative or industrial developments that could disallow use of the insecticide efforts to identify suitable alternative chemicals have to be pursued. As there are also a variety of additive/adjuvants available in the country their usefulness in enhancing insecticidal activity against Helopeltis too merit investigation. Four trials were conducted in 18-year-old cocoa plantings in Bagan Datoh Perak Malaysia. In Trial 1 11 chemicals were applied at a total of 26 rates; TriaL 2 5 chemicals were applied at a total of 8 rates; trial 3 8 additives/adjuvants were tested with gamma-HCH and deltamethrin and trial 4 8 additives/adjuvants were tested with cypermethrin 38/62. Results of the insecticide screens showed the synthetic pyrethroids are suitable alternatives to gamma-HCH with cyhalothrin at 2.1-4.2g a.i./ha deltamethrin at 0.65-2.6g a.i./ha cypermethrin 38/62 at 4.6-9.5g a.i./ha and cypermethrin 80/20 at 2.8g a.i./ha being outstanding. Cyhalothrin at similar rates deltamethrin at 2.2-2.6g a.i./ha cypermethrin 38/62 at 9.5g a.i./ha cypermethrin 80/20 at 2.8-5.1g a.i./ha and alphamethrin at 1.9-4.0g a.i./ha proved to provide consistent long term control similar to that of gamma-HCH. For the additives/adjuvants no consistent superiority was recorded in all chemicals and rates tested
