Abstract

The major insect species in West Malaysia were Tribolium castaneum Oryzaephilus mercator Lasioderma serricorne and Corcyra cephalonica and in Sarawak Araecerus fasciculatus Tribolium castaneum and Alphitobius spp. Fumigation under tarpaulin using methyl bromide at a dosage of 24 g/m2 for 18 h was effective against test insects in cups and adults in the gunny sack. However some immatures in the sack survived the fumigation treatment. The concentration-time CT product after 18 h was highest at the bottom of the stack 344.55 gh.m and lowest at the top of the stack 263.91 gh/m3. The CT product in the center of the stack averaged 327.5 gh.m3. The CT products outside and inside the gunny sack were quite similar. The inorganic bromide residue after a single application of methyl bromide at a dosage of ca 24 g/m was 24 ppm in the fumigated samples but less than 4 ppm in the unfumigated control
