Abstract

To-date more than 20 biocontrol control agents have been introduced into the country to control different pests. Examples of the use of indigenous organisms include the use of egg parasitoids to control the sugarcane borer. Malaysia itself is rich in natural enemies indeed a number of cases of successful biological control in several countries have been based on natural enemies obtained from Malaysia. But although work on biological control is being pursued there was a distinct lack of co-ordination and sustained effort until the formation of the National Co-ordinating Committee on Biological Control. This Committee set up under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture Malaysia has been charged with the promotion co-ordination and support for research on biological control and the use of beneficial organisms in agriculture. It also plays an advisory role to the Government on matters pertaining to biological control. Since its inception in 1986 various projects have been initiated by the Committee through the collaborative efforts of scientists from both the government and private sectors
