Abstract
Asparagus plantlets were inoculated in vitro at mid stem basal and shoot apex with vegetative hyphae of Fusarium proliferatum grown axenically. Epidermal layers were removed from part of the tissue except shoot apex prior to inoculation. Scanning electron micrographs showed hyphal penetration occurred between cells where the epidermal layer was absent through natural openings and stomates. No direct penetration through cells occurred where the epidermis layer is intact. Symptoms such as reddish and necrotic lesions characteristic of field infection appeared four days after inoculation
