Abstract
Mancozeb an ethylenebis dithiocarbamate EBDC fungicide is commonly used for the control of diseases on vegetable crops cultivated both in the lowlands and highlands. The persistence of mancozeb residues on some popular vegetables such as chilli cucumber Chinese kale hybrid sawi and spinach was investigated. Results of supervised residue trials indicated the necessity to follow the manufacturers' recommended application rates for residues to remain within acceptable limits. The use of higher rates may result in higher residues on crops besides incurring a higher cost of production. EBDC fungicides are unlikely to cause any residue problems if appropriate pre-harvest for various crops are followed. It was found that a pre-harvest interval of 14 days is required for chilli. A slightly shorter waiting period of 10 days is sufficient for hybrid sawi. EBDC fungicides are not recommended for use on spinach and Chinese kale while a waiting period is not required for cucumber
