Abstract

The infection process and symptom expression of charcoal rot have been investigated both in spring and summer sunflower under rainfed conditions. These studies revealed that infection of sunflowers roots by Macrophomina phaseolina started to take place very early during the seedling stage both in spring and summer. In spring this happened inspite of prevalence of environmental conditions considered unfavourable for infection low air and soil temperatures and high moisture compared to summer when conditions were most favourable. However time 50 percent infection was much shorter in summer than in spring. Disease symptoms were expressed only during crop maturity both in spring and summer. Flower removal resulted in the non-expression of symptoms even though 100 percent plants were infected and favourable conditions prevailed for disease development
