Abstract

The distribution of sago Metroxylon spp. in Sarawak and the soils of the main sago areas were studied by air-photograph interpretation and field surveys. The main objectives were to assess the current distribution of sago and to identify the main soil types associated with this crop. The total sago area is estimated at 19.720 ha and nearly three-quarters of this occur in Oya-Dalat Mukah Igan and Balingian areas. In Sarawak 62 percents of the sago is grown on Histosols particularly those with more than 150 cm of surface peats. Clayey Fluvaquents make up another 33 percents of the sago areas. The reasons for and the significance of such an association are discussed. The main characteristics of the major sago-growing soils are also presented
