Abstract
The feeding value of pith and pith residue of Metroxylon sago M. rumphii and Arenga pinnata from Indonesia was studied using rats as the experimental animal. Chemical analyses showed that acid detergent fibre ADF levels in pith residues were not high enough to create nutritional problem if stiff and coarse fibres were removed. It was observed that sago starch caused a great increase in the weight of caecum resulting in a small body-weight gain after being corrected by substracting the caecum weight. There were small differences in the digestibility of dry matter corrected body-weight gain and feed efficiency between pith residues and sweet potato residue. The present results suggest that the feeding value of sago pith and pith residue is close to that of sweet potato residue and that sago pith and pith residue may be utilized more effectively by ruminants
