Abstract
Studies on the phosphorus status of Malaysian soils in relation to phosphate fertilisation and crop performance had constituted one of the important areas of soil research in the past. In view of the availability of various phosphate sources escalating cost of fertilisers crop diversification as a result of poor commodity prices limitation of suitable agricultural land and utilisation of marginal soils for crop production numerous field experiments and laboratory investigations were conducted to maximise the use of phosphate fertilisers. This paper reviews the work published to-date in order to provide an insight into the progress and development in the study of soil phosphorus and its availability for plant uptake in Malaysia. Aspects pertaining to the inherent soil P content distribution of soil P and different P fractions in the soils are also described. Furthermore soil test methods for measuring the availability of soil P and some of the important factors influencing its availability are mentioned. It is hoped that problem identified in this review could form the core of future research programmes
