Abstract
This paper discusses the diverse chemical and mineralogical properties encountered among phosphate ores and identifies their influence on use of the ore for either processing to upgraded P fertilizers or for direct application as a natural fertilizer. For upgraded P fertilizers the influence or P2O5 concentration CaO/P2O5 weight ratio fluorine silica iron and aluminum magnesium carbon dioxide organic matter chlorides and other elements in the phosphate rock is discussed with respect to product quality and economics. For direct use as a natural fertilizer the importance of chemical reactivity and surface area of the mineral is stressed relative to the agronomic effectiveness of the phosphate rock. It is pointed out that the chemical and mineralogical properties of phosphate rock have a much more pronounced impact on the agronomic effectiveness of phosphate rock used for direct application than they do on the agronomic effectiveness of upgraded phosphate fertilizers.
