Mohamed Haji Ismail, . (1992) Present status of forest plantation development in Peninsular Malaysia. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
This paper describes the situation of decreasing supply of timber and the steps taken to establish forest plantation project to overcome the projected timber shortage. The economics of the project based on actual costs of development and operations indicates forest plantation project is a viable venture. The project which was lauched in 1982 successfully established 40 000 ha of forest plantation as at the end of 1989. These plantations were established in 4 states of Peninsular Malaysia. Another 42 000 ha will be developed during the period 1989-1993. The objective of the forest plantation project is to establish 188 000 ha by the end of the Sixth Malaysia Plan. At the current rate of progress in plantation establishment it is envisaged that 50 percent of the overall establishment target will be achieved by the end of the Sixth Malaysia Plan. Thus the venture is wide open for the private sector to embark on. It is suggested that private sector concerns capitalize on the incentive schemes presently provided by the government to establish private forest plantations
