Abstract

There are two species of Surian Toona Spp. which are suitable for large-scale planting in logged-over forests degraded lands and along disturbed riparian fringes in Malaysia. Surian wangi Toona sureini is suitable for planting in the lowlands while Surian bawang Toona sinensis would perform better in the uplands above 1200 m. Both species produce seeds which can germinate easily and are fast-growing pioneers with a height growth rate of about 6 m per year. Surian can be considered a multi-purpose tree because it produces high quality timber for furniture wood pannelling and boat building. The bark produces aromatic essential oils which can be extracted and supplied to the pharmaceutical industries while the leaves can be processed to produce animal fodder. Some management problems associated with initial seed stock seedling replenishment and pest attack are highlighted in this paper.
