Opportunities in manufacturing high quality products from forest plantation species Malaysia

Abstract

It has been shown that woods from forest plantations are products of many growth manipulation trials and generally are fast-growing low in density high in growth stresses and with significant proportion of low strength corewood. These inherent defects not only reduce the sawn timber and/or veneer yields but also the quality. In addition the conversion costs are increased and so are the residues generated. It is the object of this article to review some of the existing high quality timber-based products --- be it solid - particle - or fibre - based --- whereby these low-grade forest plantation materials could be converted into. It is generally believed that if such products could be manufactured in substantial quantity with consistent quality and complemented with appropriate marketing strategies the low-grade plantation materials could give creditable financial returns
