Raja Bidin Raja Hassan, . (1992) Study on the use of payao on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
A study was conducted to determine viability of metal FAD payao as an alternative to the traditional FAD using 3 local purse-seine boats. Size of the boats were more than 70GRT. Three types of aggregating devices were used for each metal FAD and catches for every trip were monitored. Traditional FAD were high in catch volume but comprised a high percentage of low quality fish. Average length size of fishes caught with metal payao were larger in size compared to traditional ones. FAD made of plastic strips took a longer time to stimulate aggregating of pelagic fishes compared to traditional FAD. Dominant species caught using metal FAD were Decapterus spp Selar mate Selar crumenophthalmus Rastrelliger kanagurta and tuna
