Abstract

Water quality is one of the major factors affecting the success of most aquaculture systems. In brackishwater pond culture earlier projects generally were dependent on tidal flow through sluice-gates to effect water exchange. Sluice-gates which allow exchange of bottom layer of water are preferred. With increasing intensification the tidal flow is found to be inadequate and needs to be assisted/supplemented by pumping. The construction of levee ponds to avoid acid sulphate problems also necessitates the use of pumping systems which are considerably more effective. Besides water exchange the use of aerators is necessary to maintain high dissolved oxygen levels and to reduce the formation of sulphide in the water and pond bottom interface. Aerators could be so arranged to effect the transfer of waste materials to the centre part of the pond where they could be drained or pumped out to maintain optimal water conditions
