Abstract
Aquaculture provides a large quantity of bivalve molluscs especially cockles Anadara granosa for human consumption in Malaysia each year. The existing information on heavy metals in cockles is sparse. This paper reports data for heavy metals copper zinc cadmium lead and tin in cockle species and in the sediment from culture sites. Cockle samples were taken from various location in Penang and Perak. Data indicate no major threat to public health from levels of heavy metal recorded in the cockles thereby suggesting that the coastal aquaculture industry in the country need not face any problem from heavy metals under the existing circumstances
