Abstract
This study carried out in conjunction with resource surveys of artificial reefs was to determine the success of the settlement and growth of corals on artificial substrate of rubber as found in tyre reefs established by the Department of Fisheries since 1975. Two artificial reef sites viz. Pulau Ekur Tebu Terengganu and Pulau Payar Kedah were selected and due to the limited size of these two reefs an intensive search pattern was initiated to enumerate all coral colonies found growing attached to the artificial reef. The coral colonies were tagged identified and their size measured and recorded. Subsequently the coral colonies were monitored for growth increases and survivability over a period of time. Results indicated a high success rate for the settlement of hard corals on both the tyre's surfaces as well as around the polythene ropes used in artificial reef construction. A total of 77 colonies and 23 colonies were found in the artificial reefs at Pulau Ekur Tebu and Pulau Payar respectively. The overall colonization rate increased from 0.13 colonies/m to the power of 2 for an area of 12 months old to 0.28 colonies/m to the power of 2 for an area of 40 months old. Growth rates of 5-15 cm per year were observed with the higher values occurring in the branching forms of coral
