Abstract

Malaysia is gradually becoming a major exporter and importer of ornamental fish. Ornamental fish are exported mainly to Singapore and imported mainly from Singapore and Taiwan. The export value increased from 0.05 m in 1964 to 0.9 m in 1987. The import value increased from 0.2 m in 1964 to 2.25 m in 1987. Many species and varieties of both indigenous and exotic species are bred for export and local demands. The Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre is committed to conduct research on ornamental fish to help develop the industry.
