Abstract
Islam is a comprehensive religion guiding the lives of its followers through sets of rules governing the personal, social and public aspects. Since food is an important part of daily life, food laws carry a special significance. The basic guidance about the food laws is revealed in the Quran (the divine book) from Allah (the Creator) to Muhammad (the Prophet) for all mankind. The food laws are explained and put into practice through the life, action, and teachings of Prophet Muhammad. These laws are strictly observed by Muslim of all ethnic and geographic origins. This paper explains the generally accepted principles pertaining to halal (permitted) and haram (prohibited) in Islam for providing guidance to Muslim. It then list out the basic foodstuffs which are considered as Haram (prohibited). Next, it briefly describe the major ingredients and food additives normally used in food and relates it to the halal-haram issue. The existing law in Malaysia regarding Halal claim by food manufacturers is also dealt with briefly.
