Abstract

One of the various means of advertising a food product is through labelling. However, from the consumers point of view, food label can be meaningful and beneficial. The function of food label is to provide the consumers an idea of the content and quality of pre-packed food so that an informed choice can be made between available products. Therefore, a label should be informative, well understood and useful without any intention of confusing and misleading the public. The majority of food labels has a statement of all the ingredients contained in that food and this statement is clearly displayed on the labels. The purpose is to inform the consumers about the constituents of the foods, including those which mav not be immediately visible or recognizable such as food additives or ingredients which are of great concern i.e based on health, personal or religious grounds. This paper will discuss on the specific regulations pertaining to food ingredient labelling as provided under the Food Regulations1985 which are currently being enforced in this country.
