Abstract

Using a dye marker the foraging populations of the Formosan subterranean termite Coptotermes formosanus were estimated at 2-7 million per colonies with foraging territories ranging up to 3 500 m. Fusion of two C. formosanus colonies was observed while foraging sites of the native subterranean termites Reticulitermes flavipes were found taken over by C. formosanus on several occasions. Changes in caste composition biomass and wood-consumption rate were monitored.
