Abstract

During 1987-1989 P. infestants was collected from most of potato production locations in Japan. When 762 isolates were evaluated for their mating types 122 were Al 639 were A2 and one was self-fertile. The results demonstrate that the A2 mating type of P. infestans is predominant and distributes in widely separated locations in Japan. The most significant feature of the data is that all A1 isolates with a few exceptions were isolated from cultivars lacking R genes while the A2 isolates were isolated from many cultivars having or lacking R genes. Therefore there may be a correlation between races and mating types of P.infestans in Japan. Pairings of A1 and A2 isolates of P.infestans physically separated by polycarbonate membranes formed oospores mainly on the A2 side of the membranes. The appearance and size of the oogonia formed in mated cultures were always different from the selfed ones in single cultures. Oospore formation by P.infestans was induced in potato leaves only after inoculation with isolates of opposite mating type however the search for oospore formation under the field conditions is still under investigation
