Abstract

Brunei Darussalam has been endowed with rich natural resources. Besides petroleum and natural gas Brunei Darussalam as part of the Borneo island has some of the richest biological germplasms in the world. Although a country with small land area its soil and climate have provided the basic essentials for the proliferation of tropical fruit species. Among them are Durio Artocarpus Mangifera Garcinia Nephelium and Musa which occur as scattered species amidst forest trees or growing haphazardly in house compounds backyards and dusun mixed orchards. Through centuries of agricultural activities the sedentary farmers have selected and dispersed plant species over much of riverine valleys of the country and in settlement areas of the interior. The diversity of cultivated and wild fruit species in Brunei Darussalam represent an invaluable genetic pool. There is a need for concentrated effort to collect identify and catalog carefully the entire fruit species in the country and to evaluate for opportunities these fruits can offer now and in the future
