Abstract

This paper is the outcome of a JICA-MARDI cooperative effort in order to lift the ban of exporting mango into Japan from Malaysia. The Oriental fruit fly Bactocera dorsalis is a quarantine pest of significant importance for most of our potential export fruits such as carambola papaya ciku guava rambutan and mangosteen. Fruits which are hosts to fruit flies are subjected to postharvest disinfestation treatments before being allowed into importing countries. The most popular and widely grown mango variety 'Harumanis' is currently being tested for disinfestation treatment using the vapour heat treatment VHT technology. This paper reports on the effects of VHT on mortality of the most tolerant egg and larval stages optimum approaching and holding time to achieve mortality core tempature. The responses of the fruit to the treatment in terms of postharvest storage and physiology are also described
