Abstract
Fruits are fast becoming an important component of the Malaysian agricultural production. In fact since the late 1980's the fruit industry has already commanded a small but important niche in the international export market of tropical fruits. If fruits are given the push through concerted research and development programs it can be positioned to become the fourth important remunerative crop after oil palm rubber and cocoa. Fruit research is now given top priority in MARDI. Sixteen fruit types have been identified for research. Research programs are developed focussing on fruit types and accorded priorities based on various factors. The potential for growth of the fruit industry can be expected in three main areas : export market for exotic tropical fruits processing and domestic fresh fruit market. Papaya starfruit and mango are already being exported and has the potential for further growth. Mangosteen and ciku are relatively new and have tremendous potential if given the promotion. Pineapple passion fruit and guava are established fruits for processing and soursop appears to have good potential for juice too. Other fruits such as durian citrus banana and melons have strong domestic demand. Collabrative research is emphasized both within the Institute and with other agencies. The major thrust areas for production research are: 1 the development of superior varieties both for fresh and processing 2 the development of efficient production technology with emphasis on high density planting tree size control and agro-ecological zoning 3 the development of technology for effective weed pest and disease control and better management of beneficial organisms 4 the development technology for reducing juvenility 5 the development of pest disinfestation technology for export fruits and 6 the exploitation of the presently lesser important fruit types. In the development of technology packages the research findings will be tested on commercial scale to determine their economic viability as well as for effective demonstration and promotion of the technology. This paper provides an overview of the current problems relating to production and discus
