Abstract
In an attempt to diversify from the main perennial crops of oil palm rubber and cocoa Sime Darby Plantations SDP has established a fruit orchard with an area of about 153 ha at Nilai Negeri Sembilan. Prior to conversion the land was planted with rubber. Durian and mango were initially the principle crops with nangka and cempedak being filled in to provide shade and subsidiary income. However due to agro-ecological unsuitability for mango severe anthracnose and blossom blight problems the orchard has been restructed with durian to occupy about 115 ha and the remainder to starfruit soursop banana and a few other experimental fruit trees. Durian is planted at 10.6 m x 10.6 m triangular 86 points/ha on hilly and gently undulating terrain. The main soil types are Padang Besar Batu Lapan and Bungor series. The durian varieties planted at the orchard are D24 D10 D96 D124 D99 and Durian Sawah. D24 variety occupies about 70 percent of the total durian hectarage. Experience showed that young durian plants especially D 24 are very susceptible to dry weather. Agronomic as well as pest and disease management practices at the orchard are discussed
