Abstract

Fruit production in Thailand is becoming more important in the country's economy. Although fruit total production has not increased greatly in the last five years there are signs of increased plantings for some fruit trees with high prospects in foreign markets. Durian is one of the main economic fruit crop in the country. Its export value increases every year and is expected to be one of the leading fresh fruit export from Thailand in the near future. Besides being sold as fresh fruit the processed durian like durian cake and durian toffies are gaining more share in the market. With this high potential value more research on the production to increase in productivity and fruit quality are needed for the future development of durian industry in Thailand. Mangosteen production in Thailand is rather small compared to durian. The slow increase in production area of mangosteen in the last 10 years is due to the reluctance of growers to plant this crop partly due to its long juvenile period. With the access of foreign market and better transportation in the last five years mangosteen production has gained more research attention. The future industry of mangosteen production in Thailand will be growing but the growth rate will depend on the adoption of research outcome from the government and private sectors. The research strategies confronting durian and mangosteen production in Thailand will be discussed
