Abstract

Thirty-one accessions of Averrhoa carambola L. and five accession A. bilimbi from various parts of Malaysia and USA were analysed for morphological variations. Thirty-eight characters were analysed including branching habit leaf flower and fruit characters. Considerable variations were observed except in corolla shape number of leaflet per rachis petiole thickness and number of wings per fruit. It was interesting to note that important characters like fruit weight and branching habit were quite variable with 30 percent and 31 percent coefficient of variations respetively. The maximum fruit weight was 240 g and the highest Brix was 12 percent. Higher values may be obtained as more samples were being analysed. More germplasm collection will be caried out to cover all parts of Malaysia and possibly Indonesia the probable centre of origin of A. carambola. Extensive evaluation will be undertaken with the aim of breeding new varieties
