Abstract

In order to ascertain the species of fish and the productivity of the seas around Malaysia an extensive survey was conducted from January 1985 to January 1994. Fishes were collected mostly from fish landing sites on the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia and by sampling during expedition conducted off the coasts in Exclusive Economic Zone EEZ. A total of 709 species of marine fish representing 28 orders and 138 families were caught. Total landings and annual landings in various regions and states are analysed. The state of Perak recorded the highest fish catch between 1979-1991
