Sharif H., . (1993) Application of biotechnological breeding techniques in livestock. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
A number of biotechnological breeding techniques that are being developed at present have the potential to contribute greatly to animal breeding. The objective of this review is to discuss some of these techniques viz. multiple ovulation and embryo transfer MOET in vitro maturation IVM in vitro fertilization IVF and in vitro culture IVC of livestock oocytes embryo sexing sperm separation embryo micromanipulation and multiplication gene transfer and transgenesis and their applications in animal breeding programme. Production of embryos in vitro MOET and embryo splitting could possibly be some of the biotechnologies at present that offer immediate practical application in increasing the population of quality livestock in this country. Other state-of-art biotechniques embryo sexing sperm separation gene transfer cloning gene mapping and marker assisted selection may be a long way down the line. There will be a great interdependence between the techniques new biotechnological techniques such as IVF and conventional breeding techniques like AI artificial insemination the way in which a new technique will be used depends upon which of the other procedures are available. As a result animal breeding programme will have to evolve to take full advantage of each new opportunity. There is a need not only to establish the biotechnological breeding techniques but to consider how best to use them in animal breeding and production programmes
