Abstract

Ten Piper spp. extracts were evaluated for antitermite activity using quantitative no-choice feeding assay. Pseudogates of termites Schedorhinotermes sarawakensis was used in this assay. Termites that ware reared in the absence of food could only survive for a maximum of 11 days; while those fed with paper disk showed good survival rate. Three of the Piper spp. extract that showed strong antitermite activity were Piper sarmentosum Piper umbellatum and Piper longamentum. Extract from P. sarmentosum caused 100 mortality within 3 days; while extract from P. umbellatum and P. longamentum caused 100 mortality within 4 days. Various chemical compounds have been isolated from this species such as sarmentosine 2 3 -dihydro-2-4-hydropheny 1-3-methy1-5-propenylbenzofuran isoasarone and 2-4'-methoxyphenyl-3-methyl-5-propenyl-benzofuran which might be responsible for the antitermite activity.
