Abstract

Aluminum is normally present in most plants in minute quantities. However there are numerous species in which the capacity to absorb it is much more highly developed. Some Myrsinaceae species particularly the genera of Rapanea have the ability to accumulate aluminum. Thus the study was aimed to determine whether Labisia pumila var. alata and Labisia pumila var. pumila Myrsinaceae or locally known as Kacip Fatimah accumulate aluminum using an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometric ICP-AES technique. Extracts were prepared using a wet oxidation procedure. Results from the analysis revealed that the plants had low content of aluminum that is in a range of 95.86 to 205.53 mg/kg dry matter. The findings suggested that L. pumila varieties could not be considered as an aluminum accumulator.
