Abstract

One of the means of combating environmental problems is to educate people through environmental education programmes to change their attitudes and behaviour. The aim was to identify the affective processes which must take place to ensure such change. It is argued that the cultivation of a particular environmental identity is necessary to achieve permanent attitudinal and behavioral changes in individuals. An awareness of a particular environmental aspect is considered to be the beginning of a possible formation of an identity which relates to this aspect. A distinction is made between active and passive interest in environmental aspects. Some implications of this view concerning environmental education programmes and environmental education centres are highlighted.
