Abstract

Large areas of ex-mining land in P. Malaysia are cultivated with vegetables fruit and root crops. There has been concern that these crops may be contaminated with heavy metals. In this study an assessment of the concentrations of heavy metals Cu Cd Pb Ni and Zn of three common root crops sweet potato yam bean and tapioca grown on ex-mining land around Bidor and Sungkai was carried out. From the list of heavy metals studied all these crops have the highest concentration of Zn with tapiocasweet potato yam bean. The same trend is observed for the other heavy metals. All the heavy metal concentrations in the root crops are below the maximum permitted concentration MPC for vegetables as gazetted in the Malaysia Food Act 1983 and Food Regulation 1985.
