Abstract

During early establishment period vegetative growth of Morinda was slightly affected by early stress. Prologing the stress curtailed leaf production and plant height significantly. Similar trend was observed in WW-LD. Lifting up stress onto initially well-watered plant increased leaf production and plant height. At field capacity leaf water potential psil of Morinda was -0.55 MPa whilst at wilting stage with preferential abscission of lower leaves occurred 14 d after withholding water registered psil value of -2.23 MPa. Under field condition the WS-LD treatment took 292 d to bring down psil to -1.06 MPa. Upon rewatering however psil resumed to unstressed normal state -0.57 to -0.39 MPa. Changes in vegetative development and leaf water potentials resulted from intensity and duration of stress imposed are further discussed.
