Abstract
A laboratory trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of citronella grass Cymbopogon nardus Linnaeus leaves and stem extract on termites Marcotermes carbonarius Hagen. Citronella grass were dried in an oven at 50C for four 4 hours cut into two part; leaves and stem and then finely ground. Extract was obtained from 3 grams of leaves and stem powder each using 180 ml water in soxhlet extractor for four 4 hours. The extracts were placed in the middle of a petri dish containing ten 10 termites separately. The time taken by the last termite to pass 1 cm radial circle was recorded. The control treatment used was distilled water. The experiment was carried out ten 10 times per replication and five 5 replications were used. The leaves extract was observed to be more effective in repelling the termites compared to the stem extract and control. From One-Way ANOVA citronella grass leaves extract and stem extract were significantly different in repelling the termites compared to distilled water at a 0.05. The time taken by the termites to leave the leaves extract were faster 64.80 16.47 sec. as compared with the stems extract 92.84 16.51 sec. and the control 103.18 18.36 sec.. This information is useful in formulating control strategies for the termites using natural product. Thus C. nardus is a potential biopesticidal plant in Malaysia.
