Abstract

Although Andrographis paniculata Nees Acathaceae is a well-known medicinal plant in Southeast Asia it is still not easily available to majority of the consumers. Furthermore the pharmacological and toxicological properties of A. paniculata suggest that it might be an ideal candidate for prophylactic and therepeutic herbal preparations. It is able to protect the liver against toxins or the cardiovascular system against high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. It also exhibits antimicrobial property. In this study paper discs impregnated with a crude ethanolic extract of A. paniculata were tested against the clinical strains of different species of bacteria collected from patients at the University Malaya Medical Centre. The results obtained are reported here.
