Abstract

Endophytic microrganisms living within tissues of healthy cocoa plants are being assessed for their ability to control cocoa pest and diseases in vitro. Two hundred thirty four 234 filamentous fungi and 172 yeast/bacteria have been isolated. Twelve 12 endophytic bacteria showed antagonistic activity against cocoa pathogens Oncobasidium theobromae vascular-streak dieback and Phytophthora palmivora black pod. These bacteria belong to the genera Bacillus Streptococcus Staphylococcus Corynebacterium Globicatella Enterobacter and Aeromonas. Studies to find endophytes that are pathogenic to cocoa pod borer larvae are in progress. The results of this study indicate that endophytic bacteria may provide alternative methods for controlling cocoa diseases and insect pests.
