Abstract

The brightness of unbleached chemithermomechanical pulps CTMPs from oil palm frond was found to be in the range of 20 to 30. However the low brightness of unbleached CTPMs can be improved by removing the parenchymatous ground tissue of the oil palm frond prior to refining. From this study it was observed that the effect of potassium hydroxide and sodium sulfite admixtures leads to a synergistic brightening of the resulting CTMPs when they are added to the chip devoid of parenchyma. Thus bleaching of the CTMPs to the required level of pulp brightness can be carried out at milder conditions.
