Abstract
Recent research findings have indicated that oil palm trunks can be utilised for pulp and paper manufacture particleboard cementboard gypsumboard animal feed alcohol production parquet and panel brooms furniture components and a host of other products. While the technical feasibility in the laboratory has been demonstraed the need remains to conduct an evaluation of the financial feasibility of utilising the oil palm trunks and fronds. This paper examines the cost of harvesting and trnsporting the oil palm trunks and also the amount of initial investment that would be required for commercialising those potential uses. The best opportunities technically and financially for the utilisation of oil palm trunks lie in the form of panel/reconstituted products and ruminant feed.
