Chemical composition of the oil palm trunk

Abstract

Chemical analysis on various heights and cross-sections of a 46-year-old oil palm trunk showed the presence of free sugars glucose fructose and sucrose ranging from 2 to 10 in 75 aqueous methanol extracts and 50-60 glucose xylose galactose arabinose mannose and rhamnose in the acid hydrolysates. The highest portion as well as the core region of the trunk were richer in the free sugars than the other parts. Sucrose was the major component of the methanol solubles while glucose formed the main constituent of the acid hydrolysates. The Klason lignin content was found to be more in the bottom region of the trunk decreasing with increasing tree height. The ash content was found to be evenly distributed throughout the stem.
