Abstract

Sulphate-anthraquinone AQ pulping of fibrous strands from oil palm trunk accorded higher pulp yield and lower Kappa number over the sulphate pulping without AQ especially at 11 and 13 active alkali with the addition of 0.1 AQ. In particular the 13 active alkali cook with AQ indicated an increase in screened pulp yield from 50 to 55 and a large drop in Kappa number from 39 to 28. In addition the AQ cooks yielded pulps with a reduction of shives by about 6 for the 11 cook. However the handsheet strength properties did not show any marked increase in strength properties over the cooks without AQ. Nevertheless the folding endurance showed large increase with increase in beating time.
