Abstract

Cocoa pod borer CPB Conopomorpha Cramarella Snellen has been a serious insect pest of cocoa in Malaysia and other South-East Asian countries since it was detected in Sabah in 1980. The pest has caused heavy losses of cocoa pods and affected the income of the cocoa growers. Many research works had been carried out to overcome the CPB problems in Malaysia. Among the control measures being taken are cultural control biological control host plant resistance and chemical control. Several method had been used to estimate pod infestation by CPB. However the pod infestation did not indicate the direct losses caused by the CPB and might give insufficient information for the growers to make decision in using the right control method. The severity damage of the pods depend on the seriousness of the infestation and can be divided into four different infestation category namely healthy light moderate and heavy. Each category gives different losses in term of wet bean as number of beans being extractable was different. It will be meaningful to report the losses caused by the CPB in terms of wet bean weight loss at different range of pod infestation rather than percentage of pod infestation. This paper describes a model function of wet bean weight loss using regression analysis on different range of pod infestation. The infestation pod data were collected at the plot in Cocoa Research and Development Center Madai Sabah. BAL 244 clone was chosen in this study. The total number of pods collected and used in this study consisted of 105 healthy pods 209 lightly infested pods 145 moderate infested pods and 56 heavily infested pods. The bootstrap resampling technique was used to generate a different range of infestation pods in order to estimate the wet bean weight loss.
