Abstract

Anti-inflammatory activity of the testa and anti-cancer activity of the pods of Theobroma cacao was investigated using the tetradecanoyphorbol acetate TPA-induced ear oedema model and Trypan blue assay against nasopharyngeal cancer cell Jines. It was found that the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of the testa of Theobroma cacao displayed inhibitory effect of more than 75 at concentration of 2.0 mg per ear of both extracts. The anti-cancer assay of methanol extract of the pods of Theobroma cacao exhibited significant inhibitory activity against the nasopharyngeal cancer cell lines at the concentration of 0.1 and 1.0 mug/ml after 48 hours incubation.
