Abstract

Endophytic bacteria-designated LKM 2 was discovered living harmlessly within cocoa plant tissue and was found to be highly potent against the causative agents of vascular-streak dieback and blackpod diseases in cocoa. Based on 165 ribosomal DNA sequence analysis the endophyte strain LKM 2 was identified as Bacillus subtilis. The strain was challenged in vitro with two cocoa pathogenic fungi Oncobasidium theobromae causative agent of vascular-streak dieback and Phytophthora palmivora causative agent of black pod and the pathogens failed to develop. Microscopic observation showed LKM 2 was able to inhibits the growth of the pathogens by disrupting cellular membranes and inducing cell death. The results of this study indicated that endophytic bacteria may provide alternative methods for controlling cocoa diseases naturally.
