Abstract

Many sociologists and researchers have suggested that the dominant paradigm in society ignores the environment and accounts for the fact that environmental awareness and awareness on environmental education is poorly represented in some native society. The purpose of this study was to test this assumption on several native tribes in Sabah. A social survey was conducted in Melalap using appropriate quantitative and qualitative study techniques. The result shows that majority of the surveyed native people had a good level of environmental awareness and highly aware of the need and importance of environmental education. Further researches are highly recommended due to several technical problems in conducting this research.
