Abstract
Data from a study initiated in the early 1990s indicate that disturbed peatswamp forest areas have a high composition of weedy species whereas undisturbed peatswamp forests are mainly populated by endemic species. Of the 14 peatswamp forest areas visited most of the sites in Pahang especially Nenasi Forest Reserve are still in good condition. One aquatic species recorded there was Cryptocoryne griffithii; this is probably the only location in the world where this aroid can be found. C. minima is found in Pondok Tanjong Peatswamp Forest Reserve PTPSF Perak C. cordata in Gunong Arong Forest Reserve GAFR Johor and C. schulzii in Sedeli Forest Reserve SFR Johor. Unfortunately the population of Cryptocoryne in the peatswamp area of Kg. Bangkong Pahang has been totally wiped out. Raphidophora beccari is recorded in PTPSF and Sg. Batang Pinang Johor. R. Iohii is found in S. Pasir Besar Forest Reserve Pahang and the bog swamp area of Kg. Padang Pahang. These aroids have potential as biological indicators for disturbed and undisturbed swamp areas. An orchid species Cystorchis variegata has been recorded in PTPSF and Burmannia coelestis Burmanniaceae has only been observed in Sedeli Forest Resene Johor. Based on the species recorded peatswamp areas could harbour many endemic species not yet identified.
