Abstract
The shrinkage properties of 27-year-old palm wood were evaluated. Three were taken randomly as samples from a plantation and each trees was cut into six 30-cm discs; two from the top 0.5 m from fruit bunch middle and bottom levels 1.4 m from ground level respectively. Radial and tangential shrinkage moisture content M.C. and specific gravity S.G. of the samples were evaluated in accordance to British Standard B.S. 373 1957. Results revealed that the shrinkage properties green moisture content and specific gravity were varied within tree; the bottom level recorded the lowest shrinkage with 2.3 followed by middle level with 4.6 and highest at the the top with 13. The S.G. value of the bottom level was 0.44 and decreased as it goes upward. The green M.C. increased towards the pith. The outer central and inner radial shrinkage were significantly different from one another. The effect of cutting pattern and location on shrinkage properties of this palm wood were also studied and evaluated.
